# offstage cloud

offstage cloud gives an AI agent a real Mac over an API: a macOS 27 account on an Apple silicon machine, with Swift, clang and git. Use it when work has to happen on macOS and the host you run on is not a Mac, or when the user's Mac should not be touched. Each sandbox is a whole macOS user account that you drive one call at a time: run a command, write a file, read one back, kill it. Each task is fire-and-forget CI: clone a repo, run a command, collect artifacts. The API reference is `https://api.offstage.cloud/llms.txt`.

Agents usually get four things wrong: the key handoff, the install source (the SDK is not on npm yet), paths (they are relative to the sandbox, never absolute), and cleanup (sandboxes bill until killed). This file covers all four. Ask the user something only where a step says to.

## Quick Setup

**Step 1: The API key**

Check the shell environment and any `.env` file for `OFFSTAGE_API_KEY`. If it is there and starts with `sk_offstage_` (or `oc_live_`, an older key that still works), go to Step 2. If it is missing, stop, send the user exactly this one message, and wait:

> I need your offstage API key. Create one at https://api.offstage.cloud (console → API keys; a new account first opens the link in its verification email) and copy the whole value that starts with `sk_offstage_`. It is shown only once, when you create it. The masked value in the key list (`sk_offstage_AbCd…WxYz`) and the `key_…` id are not the key. Then run `export OFFSTAGE_API_KEY=sk_offstage_...`, or add that line to a gitignored `.env`.

A key made in the console is personal: it stops working when the person who made it leaves or is removed from the team, or has their password reset. For CI or anything shared, tell the user a team owner can make a service key instead (`POST /v1/keys` with `"kind": "service"` from a signed-in console session), which works until it is deleted.

Never repair a value that does not start with `sk_offstage_` or `oc_live_`: don't add the prefix, trim a masked value, or strip characters. Ask again with the same message. Keep the key in the environment or a gitignored `.env`, never in source, a commit, a log line, or a command you send to the Mac. If it lives in `.env`, check that `.gitignore` lists `.env` and add the line if not. Never upload `.env` to the Mac: every recipe below leaves out `.env*`.

**Step 2: Detect the project without asking**

- `package.json` present: JavaScript/TypeScript. Match the package manager (`package-lock.json`, `pnpm-lock.yaml`, `yarn.lock`, `bun.lockb`), the `"type"` field, and how the project loads env vars.
- `pyproject.toml`, `requirements.txt` or `setup.py` present: Python.
- Only `Package.swift` or `*.xcodeproj`, or nothing: use the Python helper below. It needs nothing installed. Use JavaScript instead if the user named it.

**Step 3: Install**

JavaScript/TypeScript. The package is not on the npm registry yet, so `npm install offstage-cloud` will fail or fetch the wrong package. Install it from the versioned tarball this server hosts. A version's tarball never changes, so the lockfile's integrity hash stays valid:

```bash
npm install --save-dev --no-audit --no-fund https://api.offstage.cloud/sdk/offstage-cloud-0.3.1.tgz
# pnpm add -D https://api.offstage.cloud/sdk/offstage-cloud-0.3.1.tgz
# bun add -d https://api.offstage.cloud/sdk/offstage-cloud-0.3.1.tgz
# yarn add -D offstage-cloud@https://api.offstage.cloud/sdk/offstage-cloud-0.3.1.tgz
export OFFSTAGE_API_URL=https://api.offstage.cloud
```

Install it as a dev dependency when only scripts and CI use it, the usual case. Drop `--save-dev` when the project's own runtime code imports it. `--no-audit --no-fund` keeps npm from contacting the npm registry for a package that isn't on it. `OFFSTAGE_API_URL` points the SDK at this server. Without it the SDK uses `https://api.offstage.cloud`. The SDK has no dependencies and is ESM only: use `import`, a `.mjs` file, or `npx tsx`. In CommonJS, use `await import('offstage-cloud')`. Set `"type": "module"` only in a new project, never in an existing one.

Python. There is no package to install. Save this as `offstage.py` next to your code:

```python
"""offstage.py: a standard-library client for the offstage cloud sandbox API."""
import json, os, urllib.error, urllib.parse, urllib.request, uuid
class OffstageError(Exception):
    def __init__(self, status, code, message, fix=None, request_id=None):
        super().__init__(f"{status} {code}: {message}" + (f" (fix: {fix})" if fix else ""))
        self.status, self.code, self.fix, self.request_id = status, code, fix, request_id
class Sandbox:
    def __init__(self, info, key, base):
        self.id, self.info, self._key, self._base = info["id"], info, key, base
    @staticmethod
    def _call(key, base, method, path, body=None, raw=None, query=None, headers=None, timeout=90):
        url = base.rstrip("/") + path + ("?" + urllib.parse.urlencode(query) if query else "")
        h = {"authorization": "Bearer " + key, **(headers or {})}
        data = None
        if body is not None:
            data, h["content-type"] = json.dumps(body).encode(), "application/json"
        elif raw is not None:
            data, h["content-type"] = raw, "application/octet-stream"
        for attempt in (1, 2):
            try:
                with urllib.request.urlopen(urllib.request.Request(url, data, h, method=method), timeout=timeout) as r:
                    return r.read()
            except urllib.error.HTTPError as e:
                try:
                    err = json.loads(e.read()).get("error", {})
                except ValueError:
                    err = {}
                if attempt == 1 and e.code == 409 and err.get("code") == "sandbox-not-ready":
                    continue  # no slot took it within 30 s; the retry waits 30 s more, as the SDK does
                raise OffstageError(e.code, err.get("code", f"http-{e.code}"), err.get("message", e.reason),
    def create(cls, timeout_ms=None, session="headless", api_key=None, base_url=None):
        key = api_key or os.environ.get("OFFSTAGE_API_KEY", "")
        if not key.startswith(("sk_offstage_", "oc_live_")):
            raise OffstageError(0, "missing-api-key", "OFFSTAGE_API_KEY must be set to a key starting with sk_offstage_")
        base = base_url or os.environ.get("OFFSTAGE_API_URL", "https://api.offstage.cloud")
        info = cls._call(key, base, "POST", "/v1/sandboxes", body, headers={"idempotency-key": str(uuid.uuid4())})
        return cls(json.loads(info), key, base)
    def run(self, cmd, cwd=None, envs=None, timeout_ms=600_000):
        """Returns {commandId, stdout, stderr, exitCode, timedOut, truncated, durationMs}. A non-zero exit does not raise."""
        body = {"cmd": cmd, "timeoutMs": timeout_ms, **({"cwd": cwd} if cwd else {}), **({"envs": envs} if envs else {})}
        path = f"/v1/sandboxes/{self.id}/commands"
        out = json.loads(self._call(self._key, self._base, "POST", path, body))
        while out.get("state") == "running":  # 202 after ~50 s: follow it until it ends
            out = json.loads(self._call(self._key, self._base, "GET", f"{path}/{out['commandId']}", query={"wait": 50}))
        return out
    def write(self, path, data):
        raw = data.encode() if isinstance(data, str) else data
        return json.loads(self._call(self._key, self._base, "PUT", f"/v1/sandboxes/{self.id}/files", raw=raw, query={"path": path}))
    def read(self, path, binary=False):
        data = self._call(self._key, self._base, "GET", f"/v1/sandboxes/{self.id}/files", query={"path": path})
        return data if binary else data.decode()
    def kill(self):
        self._call(self._key, self._base, "DELETE", f"/v1/sandboxes/{self.id}")
```

Then `export OFFSTAGE_API_URL=https://api.offstage.cloud` as well, or rely on the default in the helper, which is already this server. The helper covers create, run, write, read and kill, follows long commands, and retries 409 `sandbox-not-ready` once, as the SDK does. It has no create retry on network errors. For anything else (timeouts, listing, screenshots, tasks), call the REST API directly; the reference is https://api.offstage.cloud/llms.txt.

Neither the SDK nor the helper reads `.env` by itself. If the key lives in `.env`, run with `node --env-file=.env` (Node 20.6+), `python-dotenv`, or `set -a; . ./.env; set +a`.

**Step 4: Verify with one real run**

Write one script that creates a sandbox, prints its id, runs `sw_vers -productVersion` and `echo "hello from a mac"`, prints each stdout and exit code, and kills the sandbox in `finally`.

```typescript
// verify-offstage.mjs  (run: node verify-offstage.mjs, or npx tsx verify-offstage.ts)
import { Sandbox } from "offstage-cloud"
const sandbox = await Sandbox.create({ timeoutMs: 10 * 60_000 })
try {
  console.log("sandbox", sandbox.id)
  const version = await sandbox.commands.run("sw_vers -productVersion")
  console.log("macOS", version.stdout.trim(), "exit", version.exitCode)
  const hello = await sandbox.commands.run('echo "hello from a mac"')
  console.log(hello.stdout.trim(), "exit", hello.exitCode)
} finally {
  await sandbox.kill()
  console.log("killed", sandbox.id)
}
```

```python
# verify_offstage.py  (run: python3 verify_offstage.py)
from offstage import Sandbox
sandbox = Sandbox.create(timeout_ms=10 * 60_000)
try:
    print("sandbox", sandbox.id)
    version = sandbox.run("sw_vers -productVersion")
    print("macOS", version["stdout"].strip(), "exit", version["exitCode"])
    hello = sandbox.run('echo "hello from a mac"')
    print(hello["stdout"].strip(), "exit", hello["exitCode"])
finally:
    sandbox.kill()
    print("killed", sandbox.id)
```

Pass means all of these:

- the sandbox id starts with `sbx_`
- the macOS version starts with `27`
- the second command prints `hello from a mac`
- both exit codes are `0`
- `kill` finishes without an error

The first command can take a few seconds while a Mac slot picks the sandbox up. Do nothing else until this passes. If it fails, find the symptom in [Troubleshooting](#troubleshooting).

Sandboxes bill per second from the moment a Mac takes them until they close. One you forget keeps billing until its idle timeout (10 minutes without a call) or its `timeoutMs` closes it, and it holds one of your team's 4 concurrent sandboxes until then. So the `finally` is required in every script you write. The short `timeoutMs` in the verify script also reserves less of the free credit (see [Pricing and Limits](#pricing-and-limits)).

## Choosing the Right Tool

| You need | Use | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| An agent loop on the Mac: edit, build, read the errors, fix, rebuild | **Sandbox** | Files persist between calls; every command returns stdout, stderr and the exit code; you decide the next step |
| CI on a public repo: build a pushed commit and keep the logs and outputs | **Task** | One call submits it; no sandbox is held open while it queues; artifacts are stored after the Mac is released |
| GitHub Actions jobs on a Mac, for a GitHub organization's repositories (private ones too) | **`runs-on: offstage-macos`**, through [GitHub Actions](#github-actions-on-offstage-macs) | Connect the organization once in the console; each job then gets a fresh Mac running GitHub's own runner, with no script and no key in the repository |
| A macOS step in another CI system, or in a GitHub job that stays on GitHub's runners | **Sandbox**, through the [CI script](#running-it-from-ci) | It packs the checkout, so no git token is needed, and the step's exit code is the Mac build's |
| Plain compiles, `swift build`, `swift run`, clang, make, scripts | `session: "headless"` (the default for sandboxes and for every task kind except `screenshot`) | Every slot can take it at once. Use it unless the work needs a screen |
| A screenshot of the Mac's desktop or an app's window | `session: "gui"` (sandbox or task) | It needs a logged-in desktop session. `gui` slots are often not available: check `GET https://api.offstage.cloud/v1/capacity` first, and expect 409 `no-capacity` when there are none |

A sandbox fits work that reacts to its own output. A task fits work whose next step does not depend on reading the output in between. Billing is the same per Mac-second.

**Getting local code onto the Mac.** The Mac cannot see the user's disk. There are two ways to give it code.

1. Uncommitted or local code: tar it, write the archive, unpack it on the Mac. One file write is at most 10 MiB, so leave out build outputs and dependencies.

```typescript
import { execFileSync } from "node:child_process"
import { readFileSync, rmSync } from "node:fs"
import { tmpdir } from "node:os"
import { join } from "node:path"
// .env* stays home: it holds the key. COPYFILE_DISABLE stops macOS tar from adding ._ metadata files
const tgz = join(tmpdir(), `offstage-src-${process.pid}.tgz`)
execFileSync("tar", ["-czf", tgz, "--exclude=.git", "--exclude=.env*", "--exclude=node_modules", "--exclude=.build", "--exclude=DerivedData", "."],
  { env: { ...process.env, COPYFILE_DISABLE: "1" } })
await sandbox.files.write("src.tgz", readFileSync(tgz))
rmSync(tgz)
await sandbox.commands.run("mkdir -p src && tar -xzf src.tgz -C src && rm src.tgz")
const build = await sandbox.commands.run("swift build 2>&1", { cwd: "src", timeoutMs: 20 * 60_000 })
```

```python
import os, subprocess, tempfile
from offstage import Sandbox
# .env* stays home: it holds the key. COPYFILE_DISABLE stops macOS tar from adding ._ metadata files
tgz = os.path.join(tempfile.mkdtemp(), "src.tgz")
subprocess.run(["tar", "-czf", tgz, "--exclude=.git", "--exclude=.env*", "--exclude=node_modules", "--exclude=.build",
                "--exclude=DerivedData", "--exclude=__pycache__", "."], check=True, env={**os.environ, "COPYFILE_DISABLE": "1"})
with open(tgz, "rb") as f:
    sandbox.write("src.tgz", f.read())
os.remove(tgz)
sandbox.run("mkdir -p src && tar -xzf src.tgz -C src && rm src.tgz")
build = sandbox.run("swift build 2>&1", cwd="src", timeout_ms=20 * 60_000)
print(build["stdout"], "exit", build["exitCode"])
```

If the archive is still over 10 MiB, split it (`split -b 9m src.tgz part.`), write each part, and join them on the Mac (`cat part.* > src.tgz`).

2. Committed code: push a branch, then clone it on the Mac with `git clone --depth 1 --branch <branch> <url> src`. For a private repo, pass a short-lived read-only token through `envs`, not inside the command string: `commands.run('git clone https://x-access-token:$GIT_TOKEN@github.com/org/repo src', { envs: { GIT_TOKEN: process.env.GIT_TOKEN } })`. Tasks take public repositories only, for now: a task's `repo` must be a plain `https://` URL, and one carrying a token is refused with 400 `bad-repo` (the URL is stored and shown on the task). For private code, use a sandbox.

**What a task runs.** The Mac runs `git clone --depth 1 <repo>` (the default branch), then `zsh -lc "<command>"` with the clone as the working directory and `CI=1` set. There is no `ref`, `branch` or `env` field: any field the API does not know is 400 `unknown-field`. Put them in the command instead: `git fetch --depth 1 origin <ref> && git checkout FETCH_HEAD && swift build`, or `FOO=bar swift build`. The command is stored and shown on the task, so never put a secret in it. If the command exits 0, every promised artifact must exist, or the task fails.

To bring results back, read files (`files.read(path, { format: 'bytes' })`). For a whole directory, tar it on the Mac first. For a task, name the outputs in `artifacts`.

### GitHub Actions on offstage Macs

For a repository in a GitHub organization, an offstage Mac can be the job's runner itself: no script, and no offstage key in the repository.

1. In the offstage console, open **CI** and click **Connect GitHub**. It takes someone who owns both the offstage team and the GitHub organization: GitHub asks you to sign in to the offstage app, and to install it on the organization if it isn't there yet. The app asks for the organization's self-hosted runners, its members (to check you are an owner) and repository metadata, nothing else.
2. In the workflow, change the job's `runs-on`:

```yaml
jobs:
  test:
    runs-on: offstage-macos
    steps:
      - uses: actions/checkout@v4
      - run: swift test
```

- `runs-on: offstage-macos-gui` is for a job that needs the logged-in desktop session, such as apps with windows or iOS Simulator UI tests. A `gui` slot can be a while coming (see Sessions).
- The job may also list `self-hosted`, `macos` and `arm64`. Any other label (`macos-15`, `xcode-16`, …) makes it not offstage's job, and it waits for some other runner. The Mac's runner carries exactly the job's labels, so if a job lists `[self-hosted, macos]` too, another job in that organization asking only for `[self-hosted, macos]` could land on an offstage Mac. `runs-on: offstage-macos` alone avoids that.
- Each job gets a fresh Mac account that runs GitHub's own runner program for that one job, then is wiped. A job runs up to 60 minutes.
- Billed like a task once GitHub hands the Mac its job: per second from when the Mac started, $0.78/h. GitHub gives a job to any idle runner whose labels fit, so a Mac can end up with no job (another runner took it): that Mac costs nothing and is stopped. While it runs, a job reserves an hour ($0.78) under [the reservation rule](#pricing-and-limits), like any other work.
- Private repositories work: `actions/checkout` uses the job's own token.
- Organization repositories only, for now. An installation on a personal GitHub account is shown as unsupported, and its jobs don't run.
- A job the team can't run (no card and no credit left, a budget reached, no Mac that takes it) gets no runner. It stays "Waiting for a runner" on GitHub, and the console's CI page says why. Fix that, then re-run the job.
- Each job shows on the console's CI page, and in `GET /v1/tasks?kind=runner`, as a task of kind `runner` with a link to the job on GitHub. No client creates one: `POST /v1/tasks` refuses `kind: "runner"`.

### Running it from CI

For any other CI system (GitLab, Buildkite, any Linux or Mac runner), or for one macOS step in a GitHub job that stays on GitHub's own runners, save this script as `.offstage/ci.mjs`. It packs the checkout, so private code works with no git token. It then runs one command on a Mac, prints the output, and copies named outputs back to `./offstage-out`. It kills the sandbox and exits with the command's exit code, so the CI step passes or fails with the Mac build. It also kills it when the job is cancelled, and a runner that dies without warning leaves it billing for at most 2 minutes after its last command. When the team already holds its 4 sandboxes, it waits for one to free up instead of failing.

```javascript
// .offstage/ci.mjs: run a command on a real Mac against this checkout, from any CI runner.
//   OFFSTAGE_API_KEY  the team key, from the CI's secret store
//   OFFSTAGE_CMD      what to run on the Mac, in the checkout's root (default: swift build); cd first when Package.swift is in a subdirectory
//   OFFSTAGE_OUT      optional: files or directories (relative, space separated) to bring back into ./offstage-out
// Exits with the command's exit code. The sandbox is killed whatever happens.
import { execFileSync } from "node:child_process"
import { mkdirSync, readFileSync, rmSync, writeFileSync } from "node:fs"
The script needs Node 18 or newer and the JavaScript SDK, whatever language the project is written in. GitHub's hosted runners have Node. The CI step installs its own copy of the SDK into `.offstage/`, so it works whether or not the project installed it in Step 3, and the project's `package.json` and lockfile stay untouched.       - uses: actions/setup-node@v4
        with: { node-version: 22 }
      - run: npm install --prefix .offstage --no-save --no-audit --no-fund https://api.offstage.cloud/sdk/offstage-cloud-0.3.1.tgz
      - run: node .offstage/ci.mjs
        env:
          OFFSTAGE_API_KEY: ${{ secrets.OFFSTAGE_API_KEY }}
          OFFSTAGE_API_URL: https://api.offstage.cloud
          OFFSTAGE_CMD: "set -o pipefail; swift build 2>&1 | tee build.log"
          OFFSTAGE_OUT: build.log
      - uses: actions/upload-artifact@v4
        if: always()
        with: { name: macos, path: offstage-out, if-no-files-found: ignore }
```

When `Package.swift` is in a subdirectory, `cd` into it in `OFFSTAGE_CMD` and keep `OFFSTAGE_OUT` relative to the checkout's root: `OFFSTAGE_CMD: "set -o pipefail; cd swift && swift build 2>&1 | tee ../build.log"` with `OFFSTAGE_OUT: build.log`.

The runner must be able to reach `https://api.offstage.cloud`, both for the install line and for `OFFSTAGE_API_URL`. If it starts with `http://localhost` or `http://127.0.0.1`, this server runs on the user's own machine and a hosted runner can't reach it. Write the workflow anyway, then tell the user it needs a public offstage address, and a key from that server, before it can run.

Other CI systems use the same two commands: the `npm install --prefix .offstage …` line, then `node .offstage/ci.mjs` with the same environment. The key belongs in the CI's secret store, never in the repository. Ask the user to add it as the secret `OFFSTAGE_API_KEY`; for GitHub, `gh secret set OFFSTAGE_API_KEY` prompts for the value. Each CI run bills like any sandbox, per second while it runs.

## Core SDK

```typescript
import { Sandbox, Task, isOffstageError } from "offstage-cloud"
// Sandboxes. Options also take { apiKey, baseUrl }; they default to OFFSTAGE_API_KEY and OFFSTAGE_API_URL
const sandbox = await Sandbox.create({
  session: "headless",        // or "gui" for a screen
  timeoutMs: 60 * 60_000,     // how long it may live: default 1 h; setTimeout extends it, up to 24 h from creation
  idleTimeoutMs: 10 * 60_000, // closes after this long with no calls: default 10 min
  name: "ios-build",          // optional; otherwise one is picked, like "swift-otter"
})
sandbox.id                                   // "sbx_…"; sandbox.sandboxId is the same
sandbox.name                                 // "ios-build": what the console shows; rename(name) changes it
sandbox.session                              // "headless" | "gui"
const r = await sandbox.commands.run("swift build 2>&1", {
  cwd: "src",                  // relative to the sandbox root, created if missing
  envs: { CI: "1" },
  timeoutMs: 20 * 60_000,      // default 10 min, max 30 min; kills the whole process tree
})
r.stdout; r.stderr; r.exitCode; r.timedOut; r.truncated; r.durationMs; r.commandId
// A non-zero exit does NOT throw: check r.exitCode. exitCode is null when the command was killed at its timeout.
// A command longer than 50 s is followed for you until it ends.
await sandbox.files.write("src/main.swift", "print(1)")       // string or Uint8Array, up to 10 MiB; replaces the file
const text = await sandbox.files.read("src/main.swift")      // string
const bytes = await sandbox.files.read("out.bin", { format: "bytes" }) // Uint8Array, byte-exact
const png = await sandbox.screenshot({ maxDimension: 1280 })   // gui sandboxes only
// Hand a gui sandbox's screen a goal: Claude carries it out on the Mac, with your ANTHROPIC_API_KEY
const run = await sandbox.runAgent({ goal: "TextEdit has a document saved as ~/Desktop/note.txt that says hello" })
run.verdict; run.reason; run.steps                 // done | failed | incomplete; failed and incomplete do not throw
sandbox.replayUrl                                  // a gui sandbox is recorded: give the user this link to watch it live or replay it
const recording = await sandbox.recording()        // its timeline: pictures, commands, runs and steps; Sandbox.create({ record: false }) keeps none
await sandbox.setTimeout(30 * 60_000)     // keep it 30 more minutes from now (like E2B); at most 24 h from creation
const info = await sandbox.getInfo()       // { state, expiresAt, costUsd, ops, … }
await sandbox.kill()                       // closes it, deletes its files, stops billing
const same = await Sandbox.connect("sbx_…")        // reattach from another process
const open = await Sandbox.list({ state: "ready" }) // every page, newest first
await Sandbox.kill("sbx_…")                         // by id
// Tasks: fire and forget
const task = await Task.create({
  repo: "https://github.com/org/app",
  kind: "build",                          // build | test | screenshot | agent; every kind runs headless except screenshot (gui)
  command: "set -o pipefail; swift build 2>&1 | tee build.log", // zsh -lc, in the clone's root, with CI=1
  artifacts: ["build.log"],              // files it promises to upload: plain names at the top of the clone, no "/"
  timeoutMs: 30 * 60_000,                // whole task, clone included: default 30 min, max 24 h
  queueTimeoutMs: 15 * 60_000,           // how long it may wait for a slot before failing with no-capacity (default)
})
const done = await task.wait()           // until succeeded | failed | timed_out | cancelled; does not throw on failure
done.state; done.exitCode                // exitCode: the command's exit status, or null
done.failureReason                       // null, or why it failed: exit | setup | timeout | no-capacity | box-lost | plane-restart | never-started
const log = new TextDecoder().decode(await task.artifact("build.log"))
const lines = await task.logs()          // the last 500 log lines (clone and command output)
await task.cancel()                      // stops it wherever it is; a running task is billed up to the cancel
await Task.get("task_…"); await Task.list({ state: "running" }) // list items carry no events
// Errors
try { await sandbox.files.read("/etc/hosts") } catch (e) {
  if (isOffstageError(e)) console.log(e.status, e.code, e.message, e.fix, e.requestId) // 400 bad-path …
}
```

What the SDK retries for you:

- **Creates.** `Sandbox.create` and `Task.create` send an `Idempotency-Key` and retry network errors and 502, 503 and 504 with backoff. A lost response never makes a second sandbox.
- **Long commands.** The server answers within about 50 s. A command still running then answers with a `commandId`, and the SDK follows it until it ends, retrying network errors on those reads.
- **`sandbox-not-ready`.** Sandbox calls retry 409 `sandbox-not-ready` for 30 s.
- **Nothing else.** In particular, a command is never started twice.

**Branching on a task's outcome.** Use `failureReason`, never the event text. `exit` means the build or tests are broken: show the user the log. `setup` means the clone failed or a promised artifact was missing. `timeout` means it outran `timeoutMs`. `no-capacity` means no Mac took it in time, and it cost nothing. `box-lost`, `plane-restart` and `never-started` mean the fleet lost it: it is not billed, so submit it again.

The SDK has no streaming output, no stdin, no `onStdout`, and no `background: true`. `commands.run` returns when the command ends. For progress on a long build, redirect its output to a file and read the file from a second, concurrent call.

If you write your own HTTP client, loop on a command's `202` the way the helper does. No request is held longer than about 50 s, so default client timeouts and proxies are fine. A finished command's answer stays readable for 10 minutes, so a follow whose answer was lost can simply be repeated. A team keeps at most 500 answers and 16 MiB of them, its own oldest going first, and closing a sandbox drops its commands, so a follow then answers 409 `sandbox-closed`.

## What's on the Mac

- **OS and hardware.** macOS 27 on Apple silicon (arm64).
- **Toolchain.** Swift 6.4 and SwiftPM, Apple clang, git, make, plus the macOS-bundled tar, curl, zip, perl and ruby. The current fleet also has Node 24 and Python 3.9. Check a version with a command before you depend on it.
- **Xcode 27.2 and the iOS 27.2 and 27.0 simulators.**
  - `xcodebuild` (`-version`, `-list`, project builds), `swift build`, `swift run`, `swiftc`, clang and make all work, for macOS and for the iOS simulator (`-sdk iphonesimulator`).
  - `swift test` runs XCTest and Swift Testing suites.
  - Simulators boot in `headless` and `gui` sandboxes alike: `xcrun simctl create`, `boot`, `install`, `launch` and `io <udid> screenshot` work, and `xcodebuild test` on an iOS Simulator destination runs unit tests and UI tests (XCUITest). Name the destination after a device `xcrun simctl list devices available` lists (`platform=iOS Simulator,name=iPhone 18 Pro`), or create one and pass its id.
  - iOS 27.2 and iOS 27.0 are the only simulator runtimes. If the user's work needs another (an older iOS, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS), tell them that plainly. Don't try to install Xcode or runtimes.
  - A link can print `ld: warning: search path '/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/Developer/usr/lib' not found` (and one for `…/Developer/Library/Frameworks`). It is harmless. Don't try to fix it.
  - `swift run <product>` builds what it runs, so run it alone. After a separate `swift build` it can rebuild from scratch and double the time.
- **No sudo, no Homebrew.** Commands run as the slot's own macOS user. Install tools into the home directory instead, for example `npm install` in the project, `pip3 install --user`, or a downloaded binary.
- **Shell.** Each command runs in `zsh -lc` as its own process, so `cd` and `export` do not carry over to the next call. Use `cwd` and `envs`, or chain with `&&`. The network is available.

**Sessions.**

| `session` | Runs in | Good for | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `headless` (default) | The slot's user, with no desktop | Builds, tests, scripts, anything without a window | Every slot can take one as soon as it boots |
| `gui` | The slot's logged-in desktop session | Screenshots, apps with windows, UI | A slot is logged out and remade after each use, so a `gui` request can wait for a slot. In `gui`, `stdout` carries both streams and `stderr` is empty |

You can observe the screen with screenshots, but there is no click or typing API. To drive a UI, hand the sandbox a goal (`sandbox.runAgent`, `POST /v1/sandboxes/:id/agent`): a harness inside the slot carries it out with Claude, called with your Anthropic API key, and returns the verdict, every step and its screenshots. A gui sandbox or gui task is recorded unless made with `"record": false`: its `replayUrl` is a console page where the user watches it live and plays it back after the slot is wiped, kept 7 days. When you hand a gui sandbox a goal, give the user that link. Or drive it with a program that runs on the Mac. That program holds no screen or input permission of its own, so it cannot capture the screen or post input itself. It asks the slot's session daemon instead, over the unix socket named in `OFFSTAGE_SESSION_SOCKET`: one JSON line per connection, such as `{"op":"screenshot"}` or `{"op":"input","actions":[{"type":"click","x":100,"y":200}]}`. Its input reaches the slot's own screen only.

**Paths and limits.**

| | |
| --- | --- |
| Sandbox root | `/Users/<slot>/offstage-sandbox/<sandbox id>`. Commands start here. The whole account is wiped when the sandbox closes |
| File paths | Relative to the root. Letters, digits, `.`, `_`, `-` and `/` only, with no `..`, no leading `/`, no `~` and no spaces; at most 1024 characters. Commands themselves may touch any path the user can |
| File size | 10 MiB per write or read |
| Command output | The last 1 MiB of each stream is kept, and `truncated: true` says the start was dropped |
| Command timeout | 10 min by default, 30 min at most. At the timeout the whole process tree is killed and the result has `timedOut: true` |
| Command line | 64 KiB, with at most 64 `envs` |
| Sandbox lifetime | `timeoutMs`: 1 h by default. `setTimeout(ms)` keeps it `ms` more from now, up to 24 h from creation. It also closes after `idleTimeoutMs` (10 min by default) with no calls |
| Ops at once | 16 per sandbox. A file read does not wait behind a running build |
| First op on a new sandbox | Waits up to 30 s for a slot (the SDK and the Python helper retry 30 s more) |

Closing a sandbox kills everything the account runs and wipes the account: its home, its temp folders, and its files in `/tmp`, `/var/tmp` and `/Users/Shared`. None of it reaches the next customer. Two exceptions: POSIX shared memory (`shm_open`) lasts until the Mac reboots, and another slot can connect to a server you open on `localhost`, so listen on a Unix socket inside the root or require a token. Every sandbox and task starts cold, with no SwiftPM, DerivedData or CocoaPods cache from earlier runs, so read back what you need (`sandbox.files.read`) before you kill it.

## Pricing and Limits

- **$0.000217 a second ($0.78 an hour) for each sandbox or task, billed per second.**
  - Billing rounds up to the whole second. Waiting in the queue is free.
  - A sandbox bills from the moment a Mac takes it (`ready`) until it closes. A task bills from start to finish.
  - There is no minimum: a 10-minute job costs $0.13. Dedicated Mac hosts usually bill at least 24 hours.
- **$5 free credit** for every new team, and no card is needed to start.
- **Concurrency.** A team can hold 4 open sandboxes (pending or ready) at once. A fifth create gets 429 `concurrency-limit`. Tasks queue: at most 4 of a team's run at once and 16 wait, and a 17th waiting task gets 429 `task-backlog`.
- **Monthly budget.**
  - A new team starts with an enforced $50 monthly budget. The owner can raise it or lift it in the console.
  - Alerts go out at 50%, 80% and 100% of it.
- **The reservation rule.** Creating work reserves its worst case, which is its `timeoutMs` at $0.78/h, until it ends.
  - Default reservations: a 1-hour sandbox reserves $0.78 and a 30-minute task reserves $0.39. Lengthening a sandbox with `setTimeout` reserves the difference.
  - Without a card, every reservation together must fit in the remaining free credit.
  - With an enforced budget, this month's spend beyond the credit, plus every reservation the credit left does not cover, must fit under the budget. Credit never counts against a budget.
  - Ask for the timeout you need, not the maximum. A 24-hour sandbox reserves $18.72, which is more than the whole free credit.
- `GET https://api.offstage.cloud/v1/pricing` returns the price sheet (no key needed). `GET /v1/usage` returns your team's usage, and every sandbox and task view carries `costUsd`.

## Troubleshooting

Match the symptom, apply the fix, then run Step 4 again once.

- **401 `unauthorized`, "that is not an offstage key: API keys start with sk_offstage_".** The value is an id (`key_…`), a masked key (`sk_offstage_AbCd…WxYz`), or another service's token. Ask the user again with the Step 1 message. Don't try to fix the value yourself.
- **401 `unauthorized`, "that key is not recognized".** The key was deleted, was cut off when pasted, was a personal key whose maker left the team or had their password reset, or belongs to a different server than `OFFSTAGE_API_URL`. Don't retry it. Check `OFFSTAGE_API_URL` is `https://api.offstage.cloud`, then ask for a fresh key.
- **`missing-api-key` or `bad-api-key` from the SDK (status 0, no request made).** `OFFSTAGE_API_KEY` is not visible to the process, or is not an `sk_offstage_` (or older `oc_live_`) value. Check how `.env` is loaded (`node --env-file=.env`).
- **402 `payment-method-required`.** The free credit cannot cover this work's worst case (`timeoutMs` at $0.78/h) on top of the work already in flight.
  - Ask for a shorter `timeoutMs`, and kill sandboxes you no longer need.
  - If it still fails, tell the user: "Add a card at https://api.offstage.cloud → Billing (console), then I'll retry." If the error's `fix` says card payments are not open yet, say instead that the account's free credit is used up for now.
- **402 `credit-ceiling`.** The team has a card, and what it could owe at once beyond the free credit (unpaid invoices, usage not invoiced yet, and work in flight) plus this request's worst case would pass its credit ceiling, $100 unless offstage set another. Raising or lifting the budget does not lift it.
  - Ask for a shorter `timeoutMs`, and kill sandboxes you no longer need.
  - Otherwise tell the user: "Your team has reached its credit ceiling. Once work in flight ends and the last invoice is paid I can retry, or you can ask offstage to raise the ceiling."
- **402 `budget-exceeded`.** This month's spend beyond the credit, plus the work in flight and this request the credit does not cover, would pass the team's enforced monthly budget.
  - Ask for a shorter `timeoutMs`, or kill idle sandboxes.
  - Otherwise tell the user: "Raise or lift the monthly budget at https://api.offstage.cloud → Budget (console), then I'll retry."
- **402 `payment-failed`.** The last invoice's charge failed, and new work is paused. Tell the user: "Update the card at https://api.offstage.cloud → Billing (console). The failed invoice is retried at once." Nothing you change in code fixes this.
- **429 `concurrency-limit`.** The team already holds 4 open sandboxes, usually ones a crashed script never killed. List the open ones and kill those you don't need, then add `finally { await sandbox.kill() }` where the leak came from.

  ```typescript
  for (const s of [...await Sandbox.list({ state: "ready" }), ...await Sandbox.list({ state: "pending" })]) await Sandbox.kill(s.id)
  ```

  Only kill sandboxes your own work created. The list covers every sandbox your team has open.
- **409 `sandbox-not-ready`.** No Mac slot took the sandbox within 30 s (the SDK retries once, so about a minute through it). Retry in a minute. `gui` sandboxes wait for a logged-in slot, so use `headless` unless you need a screen.
- **409 `no-capacity`, a task that failed with `no-capacity: …` in its last event, or a sandbox closed as `no-capacity`.** No slot takes that kind of work right now, or none took it in time (a task's `queueTimeoutMs`, 15 min by default; 15 min for a sandbox). It never ran, so it cost nothing. `GET https://api.offstage.cloud/v1/capacity` (with the key) shows how many slots take `headless` and `gui` work. `gui` slots are the scarcer kind (each is remade after every customer), so use `session: "headless"` unless you need a screen. Otherwise tell the user the fleet is full and retry later.
- **409 `sandbox-closed`.** The message says why:
  - `expired`: it reached its timeout (`expiresAt`).
  - `idle`: there was no call for `idleTimeoutMs`.
  - `deleted`: it was killed.
  - `box-lost`: its Mac went away.
  - `no-capacity`: no slot took it within 15 minutes.

  Its files are gone, so create a new sandbox and set up again. For long sessions, create it with a larger `timeoutMs` or `idleTimeoutMs`, or call `setTimeout(ms)` to keep it `ms` more from now. A sandbox lives at most 24 hours from its creation: past that, `setTimeout` answers 400 `bad-timeout`, and you need a new sandbox.
- **504 `op-timeout`.** The Mac never answered within the command's `timeoutMs` plus 30 s from when it started it, or the sandbox was so busy that it never started it in that time. `getInfo()`: if the sandbox is closed with `box-lost`, start over. Otherwise retry. A command that only ran too long does not cause this: it returns `timedOut: true`.
- **404 `not-found` for a `commandId`.** A finished command's answer is kept for at most 10 minutes, less when the team's newer answers need the room (a team keeps 500, and 16 MiB of them), and the server forgets running commands when it restarts. Run the command again, or check its effects first if it is not safe to repeat.
- **409 `op-failed`.** The Mac reported an error running the call. The message starts with the Mac's own code. `sandbox-busy` means the sandbox already had 16 ops running and no room for another to wait: let some finish, then retry.
- **400 `bad-path`.** Use relative paths with plain characters: `src/App.swift`, not `/Users/…`, `~/…`, `../…`, or names with spaces. Tar files whose names have other characters.
- **413 `file-too-large`.** Over 10 MiB. Split the archive, leave build outputs out of it, or clone instead.
- **400 `unknown-field`.** The body has a field the route does not take, often a typo or an option from another API (`env` for `envs`, `command` for `cmd` on a sandbox). The `fix` lists the fields it does take.
- **400 `bad-repo`.** A task's `repo` must be an `https://` URL with no credentials in it. Private repositories are not supported for tasks yet, so do private work in a sandbox.
- **A task's artifact is missing, or 400 `bad-artifact-name`.** An artifact name must be a plain file name at the top of the clone: letters, digits, `.`, `_` and `-`, with no `/` and no spaces. A file the command never wrote, or left empty, is not uploaded. Copy nested outputs up first, for example `command: "set -o pipefail; swift build 2>&1 | tee build.log; status=$?; cp .build/debug/app.log app.log; exit $status"` with `artifacts: ["build.log", "app.log"]`.
- **`truncated: true`.** Over 1 MiB of output. Redirect to a file on the Mac (`swift build > build.log 2>&1`), then read the file, or `tail` it.
- **`xcrun simctl list devices available` lists no devices.** The iOS 27.2 runtime is installed, so make one: `xcrun simctl create test "iPhone 18 Pro"` prints its UDID.
- **`xcrun simctl boot` or `xcodebuild test` on an iOS Simulator fails with "failed to create an audio route descriptor".** A system service on the Mac that every simulator boot waits on can get stuck after a reset, and then no simulator boots until the Mac restarts. Wait 30 s and try once more; if it fails again, stop retrying and tell the user the Mac's simulator service is stuck and needs a restart. Builds, `swift test` and unit tests that need no simulator still run.
- **`xcodebuild test` fails with "Unable to find a destination matching the provided destination specifier".** The device name isn't one the runtime has. Pick one from `xcrun simctl list devices available` (such as `iPhone 18 Pro`), or `xcrun simctl create test "iPhone 18 Pro"` and pass `id=<udid>`.
- **A UI test (XCUITest) fails with "AXDisableAccessibilityOnTermination: kAXErrorCannotComplete" or "Timed out waiting for AX loaded notification".** The Mac's accessibility is in a bad state that only a restart of the Mac clears; it has happened once. Run the unit tests and tell the user the UI tests could not run.
- **`swift test` fails with "unable to resolve module dependency: 'XCTest'".** The slot is using the Command Line Tools instead of Xcode. `xcode-select -p` should name `/Applications/Xcode-27.2…`; if it doesn't, tell the user the slot is misconfigured and retry on a new sandbox.
- **`ERR_REQUIRE_ESM`, "require() of ES Module", "Cannot use import statement outside a module", or a top-level `await` error.** The SDK is ESM only. Run the script as `.mjs` or with `npx tsx`, or use `const { Sandbox } = await import("offstage-cloud")` from CommonJS. Node 22.12+ can also `require()` it.
- **npm 404 or the wrong package for `offstage-cloud`.** The package is not on the npm registry yet. Install it from `https://api.offstage.cloud/sdk/offstage-cloud-0.3.1.tgz`.
- **`EINTEGRITY` from `npm ci`.** The lockfile names the unversioned `https://api.offstage.cloud/sdk/offstage-cloud.tgz`, whose contents change with each release. Reinstall from the versioned URL, `npm install https://api.offstage.cloud/sdk/offstage-cloud-0.3.1.tgz`.
- **`network-error` (status 0), or `fetch failed`.** `OFFSTAGE_API_URL` is wrong or unreachable. It should be `https://api.offstage.cloud`.

Quote `requestId` (it is on every error) when you report a problem to the user or to support.
